29 Apr When I first started dating my husband I didn't even really know what the term blood sugar meant. I certainly didn't know what was considered a “normal” blood sugar range (which is around ). I am slowly learning things, like its good to have soda around for when he gets hypoglycemic, and sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night for a snack.
He has had type 1 diabetes for fourteen years and seems to manage it really well.
What to expect when dating someone with Type 1 Diabetes
I havent really seen anything too scary yet. The only thing was two nights ago his blood sugar spiked really fast and really high. He took insulin and basically fell face down on to my bed for like ten mins.
It scared me, and I honestly didnt know what to do. Then when I went to go get the laundry, he asked me if I wanted help carrying it and when I said no, he stubbornly came with and got angry with me saying "he wasn't helpless". I just want some advice on what to do in these situations.
My first instinct is to let him handle everything, but mostly because I don't have a clue how to help I also am curious as to the best ways to learn all about diabetes 1. Maybe not continue reading sudden hey let's talk about diabetes but maybe if he mentions something, use that as an opportunity to feel things out a bit. While he has diabetes and it is a part of him, its not all he is, so he may not want to focus a lot of attention on this.

Blood sugar fluctuations can be frustrating on their own. Having to deal with an issue in front of someone you recently started dating, could have him feeling even more frustrated and maybe nervous about how you might react.
